Typhoon Mangkhut: Millions in Philippines braced for storm

The typhoon may traverse the Cagayan-Batanes area on Saturday and is expected to make a landfall at the northern tip of Cagayan on Saturday morning.

Mangkhut has already swept past the USA territory of Guam, in the western Pacific, where it caused flooding and power outages.

According to the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System, up to 43.3 million people may be affected by Mangkhut.

On this topic, Philippines disaster agency Executive Director Ricardo Jalad said, "residents in coastal areas must be evacuated by Thursday [today], when heavy rains are expected".

"We're anxious for the 10 million people in the Philippines living in the path of this destructive storm, including those who have been displaced several times due to the monsoon rains last July and August".

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. encouraged passengers travelling this weekend to and from Hong Kong to re-book and the airline will waive the fees.

According to Hong Kong Observatory, Mangkhut will enter the South China Sea on Saturday.

The civil defence office in Manila said towns and cities on Mangkhut's path are preparing government buildings as evacuation centres, stockpiling food and other emergency rations, and preparing rescue teams and equipment.

Two others also fell ill: Sturgess's boyfriend, Charlie Rowley; and police officer Nick Bailey. On March 4th, Novichok was placed on the front door of the Skripal house.

In 2016, a super typhoon lashed the southern section of Cagayan, destroying tens of thousands of houses.

"I'm stressing that this one is very different, this is more complicated because of possible storm surges", Mamba said, referring to giant waves whipped inland by a typhoon.

While Mangkhut is not expected to cause similar destruction, Philippines authorities warned it could cause around $250 million in damages to rice and corn crops in the region.

The typhoon is seen to affect Northern and Central Luzon in the coming days.

Super Typhoon Haiyan remains the Philippines' deadliest cyclone, leaving 7,350 people dead or missing in 2013.

A prayer for deliverance from calamities will be recited in Catholic churches across the Philippines starting Thursday as the country braces for Typhoon Ompong (international name: Mangkhut), a powerful storm expected to hit northern Luzon.

The current track of Mangkhut is that the typhoon is likely to brush northern Luzon, a less populated part of the largest island in the Philippines, which is home to the capital, Manila.

The storm approaches the Phillipines as hurricane Florence will make landfall on the south-east coast of the United States later this week.
