Transgender progressive Christine Hallquist wins Vermont governor primary

Hallquist defeated a crowded field of Democratic contenders to capture the nomination.

Hallquist will now face Vermont Governor Phil Scott, seen on April 11, 2018 in Montpelier.

The former Democratic presidential candidate cruised to victory in Vermont's Democratic primary, defeating relatively unknown challenger Folasade Adeluola.

Transgender candidates are hoping to build on the breakthrough year of 2017, when at least 10 won office across the country at levels ranging from state legislator to zoning board - the most ever recorded.

And even though she's getting media attention for her gender, the political hopeful believes that it's her policies, which include better wages, clean energy, and human rights, that will inspire Vermonters to vote for her. If elected, she would become the nation's first openly transgender governor in history.

The first-term governor, who was elected in 2016 and is facing a primary challenge, saw his stock plummet between the first and second quarters of the year. She transitioned in 2015 while she was CEO of the Vermont Electric Cooperative, a power utility that she helped turn around.

Adeluola, of Shelburne, moved to Vermont a year ago from Indiana.

Hallquist's path to victory may be hard, but the New York Times notes that with her campaign drawing national attention, she'll attract more fundraising dollars and other resources.

Following the AP projection, the Republican Governors Association (RGA) released a statement on Hallquist's victory: "Vermont Democrats have selected a candidate committed to increasing the tax burden on working families", RGA Spokesman John Burke said, referring to Hallquist's plan to increase some property taxes.

Wisconsin uses an open primary system, meaning voters do not need to register with a political party to vote in that party's primary elections. It was the first state to allow civil unions for same-sex couples in 2000 and in 2009 became the first state to legalize gay marriage through the state legislature.
