Defense Team Rests in Paul Manafort Case

Earlier Tuesday, Ellis declined a motion by the defense to dismiss the charges against Manafort, saying the prosecution failed to prove his guilt.

It is the first case to be tried that is tied to the sprawling investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, which is focused on possible illegal collusion between President Trump's 2016 election campaign and Russian Federation.

Manafort, 69, is facing tax evasion and bank fraud charges after being accused of hiding income earned from his Ukrainian work from the IRS.

The statements cap a 12-day trial at the federal courthouse in Alexandria, Va., where Manafort faces a total of 18 counts of bank and tax fraud. Those witnesses said the bank chief executive officer, Stephen Calk, overrode red flags at the bank.

Paul Manafort, former campaign manager for Donald Trump, arrives at federal court in Washington in June. Gates recounted helping Manafort hide his income in foreign bank accounts and trick banks into extending him loans that he was not qualified to receive. Manafort's lawyers will then reveal whether he'll put on defense witnesses, and ultimately, whether he'll testify.

At the same time, Calk, who has not been charged with a crime but has been characterized by prosecutors as an unindicted co-conspirator, approved loans for Manafort to the tune of $9.5 million in November 2016 and $6.5 million in January 2017, coinciding with Trump's election and inauguration, according to CNN.

Manafort's legal team rested its case on Tuesday, setting the stage for closing arguments before the judge hands the case to jurors for a verdict. Manafort managed delegates to the national convention, rose to campaign chairman in two months, then was forced out in late August amid allegations that he had failed to report his work for oligarchs in Ukraine who were allied with Russian Federation. A two-hour sealed session was held Tuesday morning before the courtroom opened to the public at 11:30 a.m ET.

According to a new exhibit submitted into evidence on Monday, Manafort - who resigned from his role as chairman of the Trump campaign months earlier - emailed Kushner on November 30, 2016, with three recommendations for senior administration positions in then-President-elect Donald Trump's administration. During testimony, Gates was also forced to admit embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from Manafort and conducting an extramarital affair.

Ellis also denied a motion to acquit Manafort.
