Ryanair flights grounded as pilots strike

Ryanair operates more than 2,000 flights a day, serving 223 airports across 37 countries in Europe and North Africa, and insists it will not change the low-priced model that transformed the industry and has made it Europe's most profitable airline.

"My only options were to get a refund or to go down the route - which I have done - to claim compensation".

In response to unions serving strike notices, Ryanair had announced the cancellations of 250 flights in and out of Germany, 104 to and from Belgium and another 42 in Sweden and its home market of Ireland, where around a quarter of its pilots were staging their fifth 24-hour walkout.

The airline said the strikes were "regrettable and unjustified" and called for unions to come back to the negotiating table. The airline has been hit with strikes by flight attendants in Spain, Portugal and Belgium. The impact of the strike was limited with Ryanair apparently able to replace the striking Dutch pilots.

Ryanair has slammed the strikes as "unnecessary" but pilots counter that the carrier has refused to engage in meaningful dialogue about collective labour agreements since it began recognising unions in December 2017. But a court said yesterday Ryanair pilots in the Netherlands could not be prevented from doing so.

The unions want the contracts of Ryanair employees to be governed by the laws of the nation where they are based, not by Irish legislation.

A Dutch court also rejected a case from Ryanair seeking to block pilots in the Netherlands from joining Friday's strike, but the Irish airline said all of its flights there would run as scheduled.

MI gubernatorial nominees begin brokering debate schedule
Brian Calley received 245,483 votes, Patrick Colbeck had 127,664 votes, and Jim Hines received 107,410 votes. Libertarians also had a choice for governor on the primary ticket, for the first time in Michigan's history.

Customers were notified as early as possible and a majority of those affected had already been moved to another Ryanair flight, the airline added.

He said they earn up to €190,000 (£170,000), which was more than their peers at budget rival Eurowings made.

Ryanair has repeatedly said it remained open to further talks with pilot representatives.

But chief executive Michael O'Leary has also warned the airline may shift jobs and planes to more profitable areas if the turmoil continues.

If this option is not available on the same day or next day then then we will try to accommodate you on the next available Ryanair flight from or to a suitable alternative airport within the same country.

Unions have strongly condemned what they see as Ryanair's attempts to play countries off against each other.
