Mueller Says Sidebar Manafort Trial Convo Contained Evidence In 'Ongoing' Probe

Manafort's defense team will have a chance to offer witnesses and other evidence after the government finishes.

Prosecutors say that between 2010 and 2014, Manafort hid $15.5 million in overseas accounts, which he did not report to the IRS.

Manafort, a longtime Republican political consultant, has pleaded not guilty to 18 counts of bank fraud, tax fraud and failing to disclose foreign bank accounts.

In several instances, Manafort signed documents to open accounts, and a copy of his passport was found in the files, she said. Trump often boasts that he hires "the best people", and the sixth day of the trial showcased two people who worked for him, one who allegedly tried to use his influence in Trump's circle to boost someone he had a sketchy financial relationship with, and another who admitted under oath that he may have stolen money from Trump's inaugural committee. Maybe I made a mistake.

Manafort is facing another trial in Washington, D.C., later this year on other charges brought against him by Mueller, including obstructing justice, conspiracy to obstruct justice and illegal foreign lobbying.

"It actually kind of shows in real time the course of months of investigation where they painstakingly did a jigsaw puzzle of records", former US prosecutor Harry Litman said of Magionos' testimony. Both moves improved the loan terms, James said.

In its cross-examination of Magionos, the defense presented pieces of evidence with Manafort's signature on them, calling into question whether Manafort had actually written his signature on the foreign accounts.

For this Manafort was paid US$4million a year, in quarterly payments of US$1million, Gates recalled, though at some point the currency switched from USA dollars to Euros.

In a filing Thursday, Mueller's team said it wanted to keep secret a discussion between trial attorneys and Judge T.S. Ellis regarding a question to Gates secret because the transcript of the conversation would "reveal details of the ongoing investigation".

Asked why she engaged in misconduct, Laporta said she had few good choices.

"I do somehow think he has gotten his back up personally about Greg Andres". Gates said it did.

"No you weren't", Judge Ellis said.

"I was critical of counsel ... for allowing an expert to remain in the courtroom", Judge Ellis said.

The judge's comments come after prosecutors said in a written filing that Ellis had authorized Welch to watch the trial and the reprimand could have prejudiced the jury.

"I would be surprised, given what's occurred in the Manafort trial, if Judge Ellis didn't issue this relatively standard instruction", Abramson said.

According to Politico, Mueller's team is increasingly frustrated with the "cranky judge" who has rebuked the special counsel's office on multiple occasions.

Gates pleaded guilty in February and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors under a deal that could lead to a reduced sentence.

But Kevin Downing, an attorney representing Manafort, got in one final swipe at Gates before his testimony came to an end. That is expected to continue on Wednesday - and then prosecutors are expected to have an opportunity to question Gates again and try to rehabilitate him.

Mr Downing forced Gates to admit he had stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars from Manafort by filing bogus personal expenses claims and that he had engaged in an extramarital affair and kept an apartment in London for that objective. Gates was asked about 11 Cypriot accounts, and he testified that they were all owned by Ukrainian businessmen. Did Gates, Andres asked, have any doubt that the special counsel would "rip up your plea agreement" if he lied on the stand?

"After all the lies you've told, and the fraud you've committed, you expect the jury will believe you?" Gates, a married father of four, had testified he used his firm's money to carry on the affair.

Michael Zeldin, a former federal prosecutor, said that in Downing's remaining hour of cross-examination on Wednesday, he needs to keep painting Gates as an unreliable person who can not be trusted. That man, Konstantin Kilimnik, is charged along with Manafort with witness tampering in a separate case.
