Hurricane Hector closing in on Hawaii and volcano

On the current forecast track, the center of Hector is slated to pass about 150 miles south of the Big Island by Wednesday afternoon, and about 300 miles south of Oahu by Wednesday night.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Ileana had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (75 kph) and was centred about 165 miles (265 kilometres) south-southwest of Puerto Escondido.

Swells generated by Hector are expected to reach the southeast and east shores of the Big Island and eastern Maui later Wednesday, and produce large and risky surfs.

The volcano is in the middle of a three-month eruption of lava which has been spewing since May and has covered 13.4 square miles of the island's surface. Lava from the volcano has destroyed more than 700 structures, including residences, since eruptions began in May.

After Monday, the storm is forecast to weaken to a Category 2 or 1 hurricane.

Two other tropical storms are also spinning in the Pacific: Ileana and John.

Dispute between Canada and Saudi Arabia escalates amid asset sell off
Since then, the Saudi kingdom has pursued a scorched-earth policy towards anything related to Canada. Saudi Arabia called that "unfortunate, reprehensible, and unacceptable in relations between states".

The island will see a major impact from Hector, as hurricane force winds extend up to 40 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds 115 miles.

On Friday, state officials warned residents and visitors to take precautions in case Hector gets closer to the island chain.

The County of Hawai'i reports that the county is preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Hector in the Central Pacific region later this week.

It unclear whether it'll hit or just brush the southern edge of the Big Island by Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

CNN meteorologist Haley Brink said it was too early to tell if the hurricane would trigger an eruption of Kilauea.

"It is still too soon to tell what effects this hurricane will have (if any) on the Hawaii islands".
