Georgia Hall wins Women's British Open with help of dad's smelly socks

Georgia Hall produced a dream final round to capture her first major title, winning the Ricoh Women's British Open by two shots from Thailand's Pornanong Phatlum at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

The large lead allowed Hall to enjoy the rousing reception that she received on her victory march up to the final hole, where a three-putt bogey was academic.

She began the final round three-strokes back of leader Pornanong Phatlum. "I love links golf and I am playing in England which is very rare so it is nIce to make the most of the opportunity".

Georgia was born during the 1996 Masters won by English golfer Nick Faldo at Augusta, Ga.

Sunday's victory was not only Hall's first major, it was her first win of any kind of the LPGA Tour or Ladies European Tour.

Dorset's Hall was a shot behind having turned in 32 but gained the advantage after draining a 25-foot putt up the hill for birdie on the 16th.

She also became the first Englishwoman to win the championship since Karen Stupples in 2004.

Home favourite Georgia Hall shot a near-perfect five under par final round to claim the Women's British Open title. Then Phatlum found one of those awful fairway bunkers on the par-four 17th and missed a short bogey putt.

Hall played safe in three-putting from distance to finish on 17-under 271.

In a three-way share of second place on 9 under is Lee, who was clear at 12 under before she double-bogeyed No. 16 and dropped another shot at No. 17 to post a 70.

Roared on under blue skies by the large gallery desperate for a home victor, the 39th-ranked Hall started the day a shot behind Pornanong, who led after the second and third rounds. I'm so happy she win, " the Thai said. Hall's missed birdie putt became irrelevant when Phatlum doubled.

"I was very confident going into this event from past year (equal third) and I love links golf and I'm playing in England, which is very rare".

"My long game wasn't quite on it today but my putter saved me and I'm just going to go out there and try to play every shot as it comes tomorrow". She earned $490,000 for the victory. The Thai finished runner up for the fifth time in her career, which is also her career best in a major championship.

"I think I will be a bit more relaxed because I've been there before but it won't be easy because it's the British Open".

But instead of reflecting on the past, the former Oakmead College pupil hoped her triumph would inspire the next generation.

Thomas had not had a score better than 67, and he had not finished higher than a tie for 28th in his two previous appearances at Firestone. His one-under-par 69 more than enough to clinch his ninth PGA Tour title - his first in a WGC event. "I did not hit the ball as well today but we had so much control and I had a very clean card at the end".

Thomas started the final round with a three-shot cushion and was never seriously challenged.
