Alleged Russian spy caught working in U.S. embassy

The female Russian national reportedly worked for the Secret Service for years before raising suspicion during a routine State Department security review in 2016, according to the Guardian.

A senior US official told CNN that the woman, who the official said had access to the Secret Service's email systems, was caught red-handed in a meeting with the Federal Security Service (FSB), Russia's main security agency.

According to USA officials, that was because she was being fed information in order for investigators to see for themselves that she was passing it along to Russian intelligence.

"She had access to the internal network of the Embassy, email and databases, including the working schedules of the presidents, Vice-presidents of the U.S. and their wives, and came to the attention of American special services for their regular informal meetings with the FSB", says the source.

The Secret Service meanwhile said: it recognized "all Foreign Service Nationals (FSN) who provide services in furtherance of our mission, administrative or otherwise, can be subjected to foreign intelligence influence".

"At no time, in any US Secret Service office, have FSNs been provided or placed in a position to obtain national security information".

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton told Fairfax Media that he was on the hotel's 12th floor when the quake struck. It had taken at least an hour to free her from underneath the wall, he said, with the help of relatives.

The Secret Service said in a statement that the Guardian article was "wrought with irresponsible and inaccurate reporting".

The Guardian meanwhile reported the Secret Service attempted to contain the embarrassment by letting her go when Russian Federation ordered the removal of 750 personnel from the American embassy during a diplomatic spat that followed allegations of Moscow's interference in the 2016 USA presidential election.

The US State Department told Agence France-Presse it was looking into the report, but does not comment on intelligence matters. As a result, the duties are limited to translation, interpretation, cultural guidance and administrative support.

The RSO reportedly discovered that a long-term employee was having "regular and unauthorized meetings" with the representatives of the Russian Security Service.

A Russian woman, whose name is not disclosed, fell under suspicion in 2016 during an internal audit of the U.S. Department of State.

"We continue to see a pervasive messaging campaign by Russian Federation to try to weaken and divide by the United States", Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said. "When we identify an employee in violation of security directives, we take appropriate action at the appropriate time".
