Student protests surge in Bangladesh capital

In the district of Dhanmondi, a 20-minute drive south from where the USA ambassador's motorcade was attacked, police fired tear gas and used batons to disperse hundreds of protesters Saturday, leaving many people injured.

Weeklong traffic chaos created by the protests began easing Monday, as enormous demonstrations gave way to sporadic protests.

"The Bangladeshi government must end the crackdown on the student protesters and people speaking out against it".

The US Ambassador was attending a courtesy dinner at Dr Majumder's house in the capital's Iqbal Road in Mohammadpur area. "Our children are very safe", he said.

She urged the students to go back to school.

The protesters have put forward a set of demands for the government.

"We must do something to save our kids". They argue that internet connectivity and digitization are of little use if the government is unable to ensure security on the country's roads. "Whatever they have done is enough", said Hasina.

But Bangladeshi-Australians are determined to have their voices heard.

Ashraf Rahman is one such person. "The commission-based system must be eliminated", said Shafi, whose brother died in a road accident in 2015. It's an issue for all of us.

As one of our loyal readers, we ask you to be our partner. They're calling for improvements to road safety in Bangladesh, where around 12,000 people are killed in road accidents each year, according to the Associated Press.

The Embassy said an estimated 500 Filipinos are living in Bangladesh.

"All of us living here, we are concerned about our family, friends, relatives living in Bangladesh. They want justice for all the lives that were lost/harmed during the peaceful protest".

The protests have sometimes turned violent, with angry mobs vandalising vehicles and confronting drivers.

A group of pro-government students attacked the student protestors with sticks, rods, stones, and pistols, said the report.

A photojournalist runs as a group of unidentified men attack him during the protests.

Telecommunications companies were ordered to suspend 3G and 4G services for a period of 24 hours on late Saturday, the English-language Dhaka Tribune reported, hours after dozens of demonstrators were injured during street battles with police on Saturday.

"We have treated more than 115 injured students so far since the afternoon", emergency ward doctor Abdus Shabbir told AFP, adding some sported injuries consistent with rubber bullets. Student protesters, who has been tweeting on the developments, said that the situation remains tense.

The police denied they fired rubber bullets or tear gas at the protesters. Twelve were treated at Dhaka Medical Colleague Hospital, police inspector Bacchu Mia told AFP.

On a related note, as many as eight journalists were allegedly beaten up by activists of the ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL) party, while they were covering the demonstrations. "The concerns expressed by youth about road safety are legitimate and a solution is needed for a mega city like Dhaka", she said in a statement.
