Dispute between Canada and Saudi Arabia escalates amid asset sell off

The equities selloff comes after Canada's Global Affairs Ministry expressed concern about the arrest and detention of a female blogger and activist in Saudi Arabia, prompting the kingdom to respond forcefully.

Saudi Arabia called that "unfortunate, reprehensible, and unacceptable in relations between states".

It remains unclear how many Saudi patients will be affected by the decision.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Adel al-Jubeir, Saudi Arabia's foreign minister, said the kingdom was still "considering additional measures" against Canada.

Canada on Monday called for Saudi Arabia to release women's rights campaigners detained in the country, which prompted a harsh response from the kingdom.

And, a tweet from Saudi Arabia's state airline said all flights from and to Toronto would be suspended starting from August 13th.

"We've been pretty clear in our dealings around the world and specifically in Saudi Arabia that we know that it's important that we bring Canadian values around the world".

Student protests surge in Bangladesh capital
A group of pro-government students attacked the student protestors with sticks, rods, stones, and pistols, said the report. The protesters have put forward a set of demands for the government. "We must do something to save our kids".

Since then, the Saudi kingdom has pursued a scorched-earth policy towards anything related to Canada.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that human rights should be promoted with respect for specific national customs and traditions.

When asked about the jailed activists, Jubeir reiterated the government's earlier stance that they had been in contact with foreign entities, but did not specify the charges against them.

A source at a Saudi bank told Reuters the bank was contacted by the central bank on Wednesday afternoon asking for information about all their Canadian exposure - investments in Canada and foreign exchange positions.

Saudi investments in Canada include G3 Global Holdings Ltd., a joint venture between Bunge Ltd. and Saudi Agricultural & Livestock Investment Co., which purchased the former Canadian Wheat Board in 2015.

"It's up for the government of Saudi Arabia and the Canadians to work this out", said Heather Nauert, a spokesperson for the state department, on Tuesday. "We are always going to speak up for human rights, we're always going to speak up for women's rights, and that is not going to change".
