BURP ALERT - Ford to roll out buck-a-beer plan

"We're going to do this smartly and responsibly", said Ford in a statement issued Tuesday.

What exactly is buck-a-beer?

The "buck-a-beer" changes don't apply to brews sold in restaurants and bars, nor will they affect the price of ciders, wines and other spirits. "Here we have a premier that's cutting income to the very poorest amongst us as a priority and at the same time subsidizing buck a beer", she said, referring to the Tories' plan to cancel a basic income pilot project. "They created a new rule, another piece of red tape that made a buck-a-beer illegal", said Mr. Ford.

The province is hoping brewers will get on board with the buck-a-beer plan and incentives will be offered for those who do.

Ford, who was joined by Minister of Finance, Vic Fedeli, and Minister of Government and Consumer Services, Todd Smith, announced that, effective August 27, Ontario's Government for the People will lower the minimum price floor to $1.00 for any beer with an alcohol volume below 5.6 per cent.

"I don't think a lot of breweries will be participating in this", Meek said, "I think it's a bad idea".

The current Progressive Conservative government has said going back to the old price would also increase competition in the beer market, without affecting the province's revenues from beer and wine taxes.

To do that he has a loan agreement with Deutsche Bank to lend him £557m, allowing him to fund the takeover. In October a year ago KSE offered around £525million to buy the 18,695 shares held by Usmanov.

"You couldn't be more tone deaf on this subject", Portelance wrote.

In 2008 the previous government made a decision to ban Buck-a-Beer by setting a higher minimum price and today the retail price floor sits at $1.25. The caveat specifying that only bottles qualify for the price comes at a time when the LCBO and the Beer Store are pushing suppliers to ditch bottles in favour of 473 ml cans which are growing in appeal to consumers.

"The impact extends beyond the price of a beer".

Even a brand like Laker, which once prided itself on its $1-a-bottle price point, is retailing at $1.95 for a 473 ml can.

Soberman explained to Global News that not all brewers will take on the "challenge" - especially not companies with pricier products.

A number of other breweries, including Great Lakes Brewery, Muskoka Brewery and The Napanee Beer Co., voiced frustration with the initiative and vowed that they wouldn't participate. "I don't know if his plan was to make the breweries look greedy or just to underscore his populist direction, but it is ridiculous", he said, adding the move ignores the shift towards more complex and well-crafted beer.
