Google may help China censor sites

The Chinese government has some strict rules about internet access in their country and project Dragonfly is being made to address those rules.

It comes as China steps up scrutiny into business dealings involving U.S. tech firms including Facebook. Still, other Google employees were angered by the news on Wednesday. And Google has apparently changed its mind about censorship.

Others commentators on Twitter have been similarly troubled by the news.

After leaving China nearly a decade ago, Google might be going back. But that doesn't mean it'll be easy for the company to explain the concessions it'll have to make to the government. "We want to be in China serving Chinese users". That's hard for a for-profit corporation to resist. "Not being in China is a huge strategic miscalculation".

Google's new technology has reportedly been in development for over a year and has already been demonstrated for Chinese government officials.

Asked about The Intercept report, Google said in a statement that "we don't comment on speculation about future plans".

"Fun fact: 2 months before I left Microsoft (for Google) I ranted to my manager about how MS had no values, & Google had a sufficiently strong moral compass to forgo business in China for greater principles", Harris wrote.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said the return of the 55 boxes was a good step but not a guarantee that the bones are American. Trump has spoken frequently about the desire to have as many remains of American service members returned as possible.

Google's new app would automatically identify and filter content blocked by the firewall.

China's internet censorship laws are well-known. In June, the company announced a major investment in the Chinese retailer JD.com while the Alphabet-owned company has also unveiled plans to build a major artificial intelligence research center in the country.

The project codenamed Dragonfly is claimed to have been underway since early a year ago, with acceleration seen during the last couple of months, courtesy high-level meetings between Sundar Pichai and "a top Chinese government official". By letting Google's search engine back into China, the Chinese government could give President Donald Trump a political victory, earning some goodwill. If Google launches a search service in China, it's on the government's terms. The project has been revealed to The Intercept through an anonymous source who is against Google attempts to ignore its "don't be evil" motto.

Sites and services blocked in China include Facebook, Snapchap, Google, YouTube, Yahoo, Wikipedia, various news outlets and leading porn sites such as Pornhub.

The banned sites will be removed from the search results, so you can expect to simply not see any results at all if searching for a certain topic. In some cases, no results will be displayed at all if a user types in a particularly sensitive query, the Intercept cited confidential documents as saying. And while investigating the attack, Google found that the Gmail accounts of a number of Chinese human-rights activists had been hacked.
