Fortnite's Android release will dodge the Google Play Store, developer Epic confirms

Epic Games is gearing up to launch Fortnite Mobile on Android soon, as the company previously announced the game would launch this summer. Speaking to The Verge, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney revealed that the team will distribute the game directly through its website rather than on Google's storefront, letting players download a Fortnite installer program that will install the game on compatible devices.

Epic Games also suggests that it would enabled the company to have a more direct relationship with their customers, and he intends to take advantage of that on the platforms where this is possible.

Several of the apps were downloaded more than 1,000 times during the more than six months that the applications were available on the Play store and gained 4-star ratings purportedly from people who used the apps, Palo Alto Networks said in an alert July 30. In addition to confirming that the game would not be available on the Google Play marketplace and would instead be offered through the Epic website, the studio also discussed the devices that it will support. On the PC, Fortnite users download and play the game using an Epic Games Launcher.

Fortnite has become a global phenomenon enjoyed by millions of players each day. The game dominates social media on YouTube and Twitch, and it's so popular with teenagers and school-age children that the iOS version caused a brief panic among teachers and parents when it bowed earlier this year, a la Pokemon Go. But the bigger reason behind the move could be to do with the 30% revenue cut on the Google Play Store. This means that Epic would have released Fortnite the same way on iOS, if only Apple didn't require apps to be vetted before they made it out to the public.

We don't know how this will affect Fortnite, its audience, or even the Android app ecosystem as a whole. Sweeney confirmed that Epic is aware of these issues in his interview with EuroGamer, but boasted of Android users' "freedom to install the software they choose", and cautioned them to download only from trusted sources.

Fake versions of Fortnite, promising to give Android users access to the game, have been circulated online. Secondly, it isn't too keen on having to pay 30% of the profits made from each in-game purchase.
