Auto attack kills cyclists, including Americans, in Tajikistan

The attack on Sunday left tourists from the United States, Switzerland and the Netherlands dead and two others injured, the interior ministry said. The stab victim, whose nationality was not given, was in a stable condition.

Terrorism and robbery are also being considered as possible motives, interior minister Ramazon Rakhomzoda is quoted as saying.

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack, the group's AMAQ news agency claimed, but did not provide further detail or evidence for its claim. He described the auto crash as "an attack", but said it was too soon to say if it was accidental or deliberate.

Another was being treated in hospital, while the French citizen survived without injury and was being questioned by the police, he added.

The deceased man's brother told the Dutch newspaper that the couple had cycled from Bangkok to China, but after running into problems with the police, they escaped to Tajikistan. Another suspect was detained. The department said it could not provide more information about the US citizens due to "privacy concerns", but that USA officials were working closely with Tajik authorities.

Tajikistan authorities said three other people were injured. "Our condolences go out to the victims' families, and we will continue to work with Tajik authorities in the ongoing investigation", the Facebook statement reads in part.

The accident took place in Danghara, 93 miles south of Dushanbe, the capital of the country. Later, officials said three of the four people believed to be in the vehicle at the time of the collision were tracked down to a village called Torbulok and that two of them were killed while resisting detention.

The British embassy in Tajikistan updated its regular travel advice for tourists following the incident.
