Scientists Want To Be Sure There's An Underground Lake On Mars

According to a report by ABC News, planetary scientist at the Italian National Institute of Astrophysics and author of a research paper about the finding said that it is unknown whether the body of water is an artefact of past oceans or part of a bigger network of subterranean lakes.

"This lake, if it really is there, would be a prime place to look for life - after all, we have similar things on Earth, like the lakes buried beneath Antarctica, and life has been found to exist and thrive down there".

"Since United Launch Alliance put a price on delivering water in space in 2016, researchers, agencies and companies have focused on water, for support of life and chemical processes, and for conversion to hydrogen and oxygen for rocket fuel", he said.

If you're now asking yourself, "Wait, didn't they already find water on Mars?" then you're not wrong.

The temperature is likely below the freezing point of pure water, but the lake can remain liquid due to the presence of magnesium, calcium and sodium.

The presence of water under the Martian polar ice caps has always been suspected but not seen until now, the study said.

Despite Mars being a prime suspect in the search for extra-terrestrial life, the attempts of finding liquid water on Mars has seen many failures.

Radio waves beamed down to the surface by Marsis penetrated through the ice and bounced back to the spacecraft.

Still, she said, there are microbes on Earth that have been able to adapt to environments like that.

Among the 29 radar samplings, the scientists spotted a series of unusually strong reflections bearing a distinct electrical hallmark.

Researchers said they are not sure how far down it goes, but that it may be around three feet (one meter) deep.

Italian astrophysicist Roberto Orosei speaks during a press conference at the Italian Space Agency headquarters in Rome, Wednesday, July 25, 2018. But there hasn't been evidence of stable bodies of water until now, the researchers said. "This would confirm that IF it is true", Kral said.

"It is unusual that SHARAD can not confirm this discovery".

"This suggests that something unusual is going on here". Salt found in the brine is expected to be the core reason that liquid is managing to exist on the planet, as it helps melt icy waters - similar to the way a road gritter removes snow from tarmac.

The lake is believed to lay underneath the surface of Mars's southern pole and stretches approximately 20km across.
