The longest lunar eclipse of the century will occur today

New Delhi, July 27 If you missed the trilogy of supermoons earlier this year, the Lunar eclipse - the longest of the 21st century - set to occur on Friday, will offer you a rare celestial treat.

Nigeria will, tonight, experience a spectacular total lunar eclipse, which will last for one hour.

Fabian says, 'If you were standing on the moon in this eclipse, you would see the sun and then the earth would come in the way and blot out the sun.

Ale said that not all full moon has eclipse because the moon orbits in a slightly different plane than the Earth and the Sun, pointing out that when the planes coincide and the Earth passes in between the Moon and the Sun, it cut off the sun rays from reaching the moon directly and thereby causing an eclipse. And, of course, there are areas across the world where the eclipse will not be visible at all, such as North America. The vast majority of people on the Earth will be able to see this stellar show, which co-incides with Mars' closest approach to the Earth in over a decade. The partial eclipse starts in India at 11:44pm IST, while the total eclipse begins at 1am IST. "The partial eclipse ends at 11.19 p.m.", he said.

Dr Emily Brunsden, director of the University of York's Astrocampus, added that this eclipse was a "micro blood moon".

What are common superstitions around lunar eclipse in India? The entire USA won't be able to see a full lunar eclipse again until January.

This co-incidental celestial festival boasts an eclipsed "blood moon" sharing a sky with the Sun tomorrow; Mars coming at its closest point for the next 17 years; and several other planets showing up more brightly overhead. "The eclipse will last for 103.6 minutes", Ratnashree said.

People also might have noticed five planets - Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and Mars - all together in the evening sky lately.

The moon will begin to move into the penumbra - the fuzzy outer edge of the Earth's shadow - at 17:14 GMT. Combined with the red tinge of the Moon, the two will make for an incredibly rare spectacle in the night sky. A total lunar eclipse would paint the entire moon blood red on Friday. The fact that the moon appears so small and takes longer to pass through Earth's shadow is also why the eclipse lasts longer.

What is Blood moon or Red Moon?

The "blood moon" effect is due to the visual effect generated when sunlight filters into the atmosphere and the colours orange and red are projected onto the Moon.

The professor observed that a lunar eclipse could occur only on the night of a full moon.

No glasses are needed for the lunar eclipse due to its dimmer colour.

Unlike a solar eclipse, the lunar event can be viewed without wearing protective eye gear.
