Intelligence Director on Putin Invite: 'Say That Again?'

Ambassador Anatoly Antonov said the Kremlin was ready to discuss the offer made by the USA president, amid continuing domestic criticism of his first meeting with the Russian leader in Helsinki.

Trump on Tuesday said he misspoke during the news conference. "In the Old Days they would call it Diplomacy".

When is Putin visiting Trump in USA?

It restated the U.S. intelligence community's assessment that Moscow did extensively interfere, and continues to interfere.

Hours after Antonov spoke, the White House shot down the idea, saying the Trump administration "is not considering supporting" such a referendum.

The move may be seen as an effort to sidestep European peace efforts for Ukraine and increase the pressure on the Ukrainian government in its protracted conflict with pro-Russian separatists in the Donbas region.

US Press Secretary Sarah Sanders tweeted yesterday announcing that President Trump had asked for Putin to be invited to Washington this autumn.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in a Twitter post that Trump had directed national security adviser John Bolton to issue the invitation, even though US lawmakers and top officials in Trump's administration have not been briefed on what Trump and Putin discussed in Monday's summit with only interpreters present. Limited details have emerged, but Antonov said discussions included ways to cooperate on arms control and Iran's nuclear activities.

Israeli soldier and four Palestinians killed in Gaza Strip clashes
Israel launched a wave of attacks on military targets in the Gaza Strip, after its soldiers came under gunfire at the border. More than 135 mostly unarmed Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the border protests began on March 30.

US officials have been mum on what, if anything, the two leaders agreed to in Helsinki during a two-hour, one-on-one meeting.

The Russian leader said that during his "very successful" one-on-one meeting, Trump paid "special attention" to the issue, "and I would like to confirm that Russia is interested in this development and will act accordingly". "There are many answers, some easy and some hard, to these problems.but they can ALL be solved!" "In the United States, in Russian Federation, or anywhere else", he said in a statement.

Antonov said Moscow is working to return her to Russian Federation.

Trump came under sharp criticism from both sides of the aisle when he appeared to take Putin's denial of 2016 election meddling over the conclusion of USA intelligence agencies at their joint press conference on Monday.

Following their meeting in Finland, Trump tweeted of looking forward to a second meeting with Russia's president: "The Summit with Russian Federation was a great success, except with the real enemy of the people, the Fake News Media".

The US president had initially described the proposal as an "incredible offer".

The White House is still trying to clean up post-summit Trump statements on Russian interference in the 2016 election.

The White House backtrack came just before the Senate voted overwhelmingly against the proposal.
