Where you can watch Obama’s Nelson Mandela lecture online

These movements, Obama said, have struck a chord among "people living outside the urban core who feel like security is slipping away, their social status and privileges eroding, their cultural identities threatened by outsiders". "They just double down and lie some more".

Politicians using "politics of fear, resentment, retrenchment" were rising "at a pace unimaginable just a few years ago", Mr Obama warned.

Obama criticized climate-change deniers, race-based migration policies, unbridled capitalism and "strongman politics" - all issues likely to be seen as veiled attacks on Trump. "If you start saying it's an elaborate hoax, I don't know where to start".

Obama opened by calling today's times "strange and uncertain", adding that "each day's news cycle is bringing more head-spinning and disturbing headlines".

Previous speakers at the event include US entrepreneur and philanthropist Bill Gates, French economist Prof Thomas Piketty, former Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Kenyan Nobel laureate and political activist Wangari Maathai, ex-UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and former US President Bill Clinton.

Obama pointed out that he was standing at this podium, more than a quarter century after Mandela walked out of prison, to say that "we are all human".

"With the debate around immigration, it's not wrong to insist that national borders matter...laws need to be followed...in our realm newcomers should make an effort to adapt to their new home, and we need to be able to engage with those people who feel that things are not orderly", Obama said. "It used to be that if you caught them lying, they'd be like, oh man - now they just keep on lying", he said, to laughter in the crowd.

African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Mandela's widow Graca Machel were among the guests from Obama's speech.

Obama also will highlight one goal of his post-presidency, the promotion of young people as future leaders, Rhodes said. "Two different stories, two different narratives about who we are and who we should be. how should we respond?"

"You have to believe in facts, without facts there is no basis for cooperation", he said. "Should we see that hope that we had as naive and misguided?" he asked.

Speaking about Mandela's legacy of "freedom, justice and equal opportunity", Obama said the world must also "recognize all the ways the global order has fallen short of his promise".

The "Mandela 100" anniversary has triggered a bout of memories and tributes to the late anti-apartheid leader, as well as a debate over his legacy and South Africa's fate since he stepped down in 1999.

For almost a decade, Mandela Day has been celebrated globally on 18 July in recognition of the late former president, who spent 67 years of his life in the service of humanity. "The man went to prison for nearly three decades".
