Cal Fire reports firefighter fatality in Sierra forest fire

A firefighter died Saturday morning while battling the Ferguson Fire west of Yosemite National Park, Cal Fire said.

Investigators were trying to find out more details about Varney's death, but they believe he was working his way out of the fire area when he was killed, Koerperich said.

No memorial service plans are available at this time.

The fire is burning in Mariposa County, near the west end of Yosemite National Park and the Sierra National Forest. The last CalFire firefighter to die was in December 2017 on the Thomas Fire, the largest in California's history and one of a rash of blazes that destroyed thousands of homes and killed 43 people in the state. It shut down a key route into the park and prompted mandatory evacuations for Yosemite Cedar Lodge, which is outside the park, and nearby communities.

He voiced 'My message to her [Meghan Markle] would be, "I love you, I miss you, I'm sorry for anything that went wrong,"'. Later in the interview , Thomas also claimed he has been unable to reach Meghan by phone.

The Ferguson fire in Mariposa County broke out Friday and is burning largely out of control. Chief Corprich went on to say she was working to build a fire break so that flames would not spread to the nearby Jerseydale and Midpines communities. Varney had been with Cal Fire for a decade.

Varney, who was married with two young children, had worked for Cal Fire for 10 years. Based on equipment requests and aircraft tracking systems, firefighters were hitting the fire hard over fears it could grow rapidly. "The fire behavior became very active and changed from its moderate behavior in the early afternoon". Those fires are both now 90 percent contained, but a series of other small fires has popped up across the state.

In honor of Heavy Equipment Operator Varney, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.
