Top Twitter users lose 2% of followers on average as policy changes

Among the biggest losers is former President Barack Obama, who lost more than 2 million followers in the purge of accounts suspected of being fake.

In the global scene, United States President Donald Trump lost 326,118 followers on Thursday and later gained 5,339 followers on Friday.

President Trump has used the platform to make official statements, rant about news outlets, bully opponents, connect directly to his followers, and with a single tweet, caused a media firestorm. Perry, who had 110 million followers before the purge, now has 107 million followers.

Twitter has been under increased public scrutiny over complaints of fake and automated Twitter profiles that are spreading fake news, spamming the micro-blogging site, abusing others or impersonating people.

Back in January, the New York Times took a deep dive into an obscure company called Devumi, which sells Twitter followers - fake ones, though some contain the personal details of real Twitter users - to users who want to pad their social-media statistics.

Across the board, Twitter's most followed celebrities felt a cut on Thursday.

Friday's indictments come ahead of Tuesday's scheduled meeting between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The No. 2 Justice Department official said Trump, who is traveling in Europe, was briefed on the matter earlier this week.

"Over the years, we've locked accounts when we detected sudden changes in account behaviour", Twitter spokeswoman Vijaya Gadde said.

As Twitter continues to rid its platform of suspicious accounts, many users, including influential profiles like U.S. President Donald Trump, could see a significant drop in followers.

Nyakundi's followers have reduced from a whopping 1.2 million to 696,000 while Dela's numbers now stand at 521,000 from an impressive one million.

"People having an artificially-inflated follower count made up of bots and redundant accounts is at best deceiving and at worst, fraud".

If your account has been locked during Twitter's purge, it will remain in the same state unless the owner validates the account and resets the password.

Well, it is now happening and people have started noticing the drop in follower accounts. Locked accounts had already been kept out of Twitter's daily and monthly active user figures.

Coming back to the local scene, we have seen some significant drop in follower counts in some accounts.
