Recalled Honey Smacks still on store shelves; more people sick

Updates from the CDC and FDA say Honey Smacks of all package sizes and best-by dates should be thrown out.

Kellogg's first issued a product recall on 14 June that warned of possible salmonella contamination.

The cereal is the likely source of the salmonella outbreak, the CDC said.

In June, Kellogg said it was investigating the third-party manufacturer that produces Honey Smacks after it was contacted by the FDA and CDC about the illness.

The agency says it found salmonella in samples of Honey Smacks, which has been subject to a voluntary recall by Kellogg since mid-June.

Retailers should not sell or serve Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal. "The public is urged to report any product being offered for sale".

Meanwhile, the number of sick people continues to increase.

The cases have been reported in 33 states, including New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, California, Maryland and Virginia. Customers should either throw away the product or may return their box of cereal to a store for a full refund. "No deaths have been reported", the agency reported on its website. "Thoroughly wash the container with warm, soapy water before using it again, to remove harmful germs that could contaminate other food".

Two people in Kentucky have become ill with this strain of Salmonella.

Symptoms last about four to seven days, and although most people improve without treatment, some may require hospitalization because of severe diarrhea.
