Nearly 100 aircraft took part in the celebratory procession, including three new F35 Lightning stealth fighters, several military helicopters, and planes from the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) including Spitfires and a Lancaster bomber.

The Royal Air Force marked its official centenary on 1st April but made a decision to wait for exactly 100 days until the 10th July to have the formal parade and flypast. Nearly 100 planes representing the RAF over the years flew over The Mall following a parade by personnel.

The operational strength of the RAF in Europe had diminished to about 2,000 aircraft by the time World War II began in September 1939.

Today, the RAF is engaged on some 13 missions across 26 countries and is heavily committed on operations both at home and overseas.

The celebrations Tuesday marked the second event in a busy week for Britain's royals, following Monday's christening and ahead of the Queen's meeting with US President Donald Trump at Windsor Castle on Friday.

Following the Westminster Abbey Service massed bands and more than 1,000 men and women marched up The Mall to the palace, waved on and cheered by thousands of members of the public.
