Liverpool star Dejan Lovren demands respect from critics following World Cup heroics

Lovren was a defensive rock as Croatia came from behind to beat England in the semi-final on Wednesday and seal a date with France in Moscow on Sunday.

Less than two months after lining up for Liverpool in the Champions League final, he is now heading for the biggest match in global football.

Reaching the Champions League final at the end of last season does make Liverpool a pretty big attraction for any potential recruits during the transfer window and Klopp will be hoping to get the signatures of some more stellar players.

Speaking after Croatia's 2-1 win over England, Lovren told beIN Sports: 'It's something special, for me.

"I took Liverpool to the final of the Champions League, and now with my national team, we are in the (World Cup) final".

"But I like to challenge these strikers and to show to everyone that I'm one of the best defenders".

"I live in England and have two players in the England team, so I was a little bit more for England", he said. He deserves, if we win this World Cup, the Ballon d'Or'.

The Real Madrid star has captained Croatia to their first World Cup final, improving on the country's previous best performance at the tournament in 1998, when they finished third.

He continued: 'This is something we will never forget.

"People are crying, they are happy in our country - this is something historical for us", Lovren said. We will never forget this. "People will never forget us", he added.

"We have the chance to do something better, and hopefully we can do it on Sunday".

"It was quite tough first half, we couldn't control the ball and they had some chances, but in the second half we did much better".

But after the break, Croatia took control, equalised through Ivan Perisic and then won the game with Mario Mandzukic's extra-time strike.
