The list excluded long-running ABC comedy Modern Family, which has won five consecutive Best Comedy Emmys (2010 to 2014) and has earned a nomination in the category every year since its 2009 release. Netflix's GLOW was nominated for Best Comedy Series while Betty Gilpin, who portrays Debbie on the series, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress In a Comedy. Other nominees in the category include Jason Bateman ("Ozark"), Ed Harris ("Westworld") and Matthew Rhys ("The Americans").

Markle's name was submitted for "Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series" for her role as Rachel Zane on "Suits", but the newly-minted royal wasn't nominated.

HBO awards darling Veep was ineligible this year and its crown passed to Atlanta, the FX comedy created by and starring Donald Glover, which amassed 16 nods. Sterling K. Brown, who won lead actor in a drama series a year ago for the show, is nominated again; he'll compete against Jeffrey Wright ("Westworld").

Its medieval fantasy drama Game of Thrones led the pack among programmes, with mentions in 22 categories, including Outstanding Drama Series. It was not in the running in 2017.
