Trump visits United Kingdom amid acrimonious relationship with London

President Donald Trump touched down in Britain on Thursday, where he will get the red carpet treatment on a brief visit: Military bands at a gala dinner, lunch with the prime minister at her country residence, then tea with the queen at Windsor Castle before flying off to one of his golf clubs in Scotland.

He described the United Kingdom as "hot spot right now with a lot of resignations" and dismissed the Prime Minister's Chequers plan on the next stage of Brexit.

The trek, coming more than a year and a half into his presidency, does not have the trappings of a state visit.

As well as in London, protests are expected to take place in Bristol, Newcastle, Leeds, Cambridge and Cardiff after Trump arrives here on Thursday.

A giant six-metre-high blimp of Trump depicted as an orange baby in nappies is also expected to fly over the capital.

"There is no stronger alliance than that of our special relationship with the US and there will be no alliance more important in the years ahead", May said in a statement.

Mr Trump will meet the US Ambassador at Winfield House after arriving and then head to Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire.

The organisers behind the blimp however, said they were just "poking fun" and "hope Trump sees it".

"So I would imagine that's what they will do, but maybe they will take a little bit of a different route".

The people who started the campaign say that the balloon is a means to ensure that Trump "knows that all of Britain is looking down on him and laughing at him".

The major changes include moving The Players Championship from May to March and the PGA Championship from August to May. The Northern Trust (August 5-11) will rotate between the New York City area and TPC Boston every year starting in 2020.

During his news conference on Thursday, the USA president also appeared to refer to Ireland as part of the United Kingdom.

"Maybe they're taking a little bit of a different route [on Brexit], so I don't know if that's what they voted for", he told a press conference after the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels.

The bulk of the activity will take place in London, where people plan to gather first in Regent's Park outside of the USA ambassador's house on Thursday and again across central London for a series of protests throughout the day on Friday.

The Stop Trump Coalition accused the president of being "too scared to face protestors".

In other news from this morning's press conference, Trump stunted expectations when he refused to comment on the UK's current Brexit turmoil.

Many thousands of Britons are expected to protest against Mr Trump in London and other cities.

Its appearance in central London was approved by the Greater London Authority.

May will host a black-tie dinner for Trump there, attended by senior ministers and about 100 business leaders, including from Blackstone group, Blackrock, Diageo, McLaren and Arup.

On Friday, Trump will meet May and her newly appointed Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt at the prime minister's countryside retreat, Chequers.
