Kim did not meet with the secretary of State.

The Joint Security Area was created in 1953 as a neutral area inside the Demilitarised Zone.

But a closer look at the language of the statement has actually led one analyst to be optimistic that a "train wreck" may have been averted during Pompeo's meeting, and that the door is still open to progress.

Trump has expressed an eagerness to tout the recovery of the war dead, telling Fox News that Kim was "giving us back the remains of probably 7,500 soldiers".

The agency has built up a DNA database from relatives that covers 92 percent of the Korean War missing, versus 85 percent for the Vietnam War and 3 percent for World War Two.

Thirteen years after its last work in North Korea, the agency could return after leader Kim Jong Un agreed at a June 12 summit with President Donald Trump to resume the recovery and repatriation of US remains. The news agency noted that the request followed North Koreans not showing up to the meeting with USA representatives. As the war was fought on Korean soil, however, only North Korea has remains to return.

The agency also says that North Korean officials have indicated they have "as many as 200 sets of remains" already recovered that could be ready for return. It does not, however, give any mention to the end of North Korea's nuclear program, nor the end of the country's regular human rights abuses.
