PGA Tour cut FedExCup play-offs to three events in 2018-19 schedule

"We will be working with the PGA Tour to make the Detroit stop one of the most exciting and engaging events on the professional golf calendar".

The Northern Trust (August 5-11) will rotate between the New York City area and TPC Boston every year starting in 2020.

The Aon Risk Reward Challenge competition will take place over an entire season, and will feature the world's top golfers as they tackle some of the most "strategically challenging" holes across both the PGA Tour and LPGA schedules, a release said. The Houston Open and A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier are moving to the fall and will be played next as part of the 2019-20 schedule.

The equal payout for the men and women earned the attention of the LPGA Tour members, whose financial compensation in the competitive and corporate spheres lag far behind their PGA Tour brethren.

Still to be determined is whether the PGA Tour will change the structure for the FedEx Cup, and how this new schedule will work in 2020 when the Olympics are in Japan from July 24 to August 9. "It's been our stated objective for several years to create better sequencing of our tournaments that golf fans around the world can engage in from start to finish".

Preparations for the final Dell Technologies Championship are underway and the 100-player field will have its unique Monday finish for one last time on September 3.

While The Open, to be played at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland next year, becomes the last of the four majors, it will be a mad dash to the finish for PGA Tour players.

The major changes include moving The Players Championship from May to March and the PGA Championship from August to May. Jack Nicklaus' Memorial Tournament takes its usual spot two weeks before the U.S. Open, with the Canadian Open in between.

The WGC will play in Akron, Ohio, for the final time next month as the event moves to Memphis for the WGC St. Jude Invitational, replacing a regular tour event, next July.

The U.S. Open will have a new lead-in event next summer as the RBC Canadian Open moves from late July to June 3-9, 2019, the week before the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.
