Trump says North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries should ´reimburse´ U.S. for defense costs

Since taking office in 2017, Trump affirmed the US commitment to the defense of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies, but he has continued to criticize NATO's funding, arguing Washington is shouldering too much of the financial burden. NATO & US troops in Europe serve our national interests.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced hours after the exchange over Germany that Trump would meet later Wednesday with Merkel, as well as with French President Emmanuel Macron.

In a stunning back and forth at Wednesday morning's bilateral breakfast at the ambassador's residence in Brussels, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg defended NATO's alliance as Trump continued to lob attacks on Germany.

Trump, who later arrived at NATO's new billion-dollar headquarters in his presidential limousine, appeared to substantially overstate German reliance on Russian energy and to imply the German government was funding the pipeline, which Berlin says is a commercial venture.

Speaking after the one-on-one meeting with Trump was announced, Merkel rejected his criticism of the gas pipeline project with Russian Federation. As part of NATO's military training project in Iraq, military schools and academies will be built.

"Dear America, appreciate your allies, after all you don't have that many", Mr Tusk, a former Polish prime minister, said.

The president touted that the USA lost $151 billion past year on trade and slapped tariffs on other countries in an effort towards free and fair trade.

He said the usa did not and would not have a better ally than the EU, reminding the president that European troops had also fought and died in Afghanistan after the 11 September 2001 attacks on the US.

Trump then heads to Helsinki to meet Putin.

Iran Warns India Against Oil Imports From US and Saudi Arabia
Iran, OPEC's third-largest producer, is facing U.S. sanctions on its oil exports that are prompting some buyers to cut purchases. It said that the United States was "not granting waivers" to any country which was in business with Iran.

Trump will meet the Russian leader in the Finnish capital on July 16 for their first summit amid an ongoing investigation in the United States into possible Trump campaign collusion with Russia.

He also repeated misleading statements about which countries are meeting the alliance's Defense Investment Pledge, in which each member state is expected to spend 2 percent of their GDP on defense, and about when those falling short are expected to meet that goal.

"Billions and billions of dollars being paid to the country we are supposed to be protecting you against", Trump said to Stoltenberg.

President Trump touched down in Brussels on Tuesday, kicking off a week-long tour of Europe that will take him to four countries.

Under a 2014 agreement, each member state is required to boost military spending to 2 percent of its gross domestic product by 2024.

The 1.5 percent level forecast for NATO's European members in 2018 compares to 1.46 percent previous year, 1.44 percent in 2016 and 1.42 percent in 2015. "It is always worth knowing who is your strategic friend and who is your strategic problem", he said.

Mr Trump has linked the issue of United States military spending to the EU's trade surplus with the U.S., complaining that the bloc "makes it impossible for our farmers and workers and companies to do business in Europe" and then "want us to happily defend them through Nato". "I think these countries have to step it up, not over a 10-year period, but immediately".

At a time when Russian Federation is an worldwide pariah because of its invasions of neighbors like Georgia and Ukraine, the president of the United States has repeatedly denigrated the country's historical allies in Europe while expressing hope that relations with Russian Federation will become closer.
