Iranian women dance for justice after government detains teen for video

There has been widespread outcry over the arrest of Hojabri and the other detainees among Iranians in Iran and overseas, by artists, journalists, activists, politicians and thousands of ordinary citizens on social media.

Hojabri, who had more than 60,000 followers on Instagram, appeared on state television Friday and confessed to breaking moral norms, an appearance that activist believe was a forced. "I only do gymnastics".

After her detention Hojabri was featured in a TV program about social media, where she appeared with her face in shadow and was accused by her interviewer of posting images "that disrupt society". According to Shabooneh, a local news website, three other individuals were also released on bail after receiving similar charges.

Hojabri recorded and posted around 300 videos on Instagram of herself dancing in what Iran would deem an "immoral" manner.

Blogger Hossein Ronaghi said, "People would laugh at you if you tell anyone in the world that [in Iran] they arrest 17-year-olds and 18-year-olds for dancing, being happy and being handsome, for spreading indecency, and instead paedophiles are free".

Iranian-American journalist Arash Sigarchi tweeted: "40 years ago, dance were taught in school in Iran but after the Islamic revolution 1979 it became a big crime!"

Iranian authorities have previously cracked down on dancing.

Dancing with people of the opposite sex with who are not relatives is forbidden. They were later charged with seeking to "change lifestyles and promote lack of hijab". In 2014, a group of Pharrell Williams fans arrested for sharing videos of themselves dancing to the song Happy on the rooftops of Tehran and got suspended sentences of imprisonment and lashes.
