In full-page ad, WhatsApp urges users in India to fight fake news

In the wake of ever-increasing incidents of fake news being shared through social media, WhatsApp has come up with a new feature to spare users from malicious messages.

The company previously announced a program to award researchers looking into the spread of misinformation among communities. Messages will be highlighted to make a difference that the message was not typed out but just forwarded. The company ad says, "Together we can fight false information". It has also advised users to double check facts when you're not sure who wrote the original message. The ad campaign suggested few tips for the users to distinguish between a real or fake message.

Following 29 deaths in India, that were attributed by some to WhatsApp fake news, parent company Facebook has created a way to help avoid bad link sharing in the future. Our first step is placing newspaper advertisements across the country in English, Hindi, and several other languages.

Evidently WhatsApp has made a decision to take that feature forward, at least in India, although how effective a check it will be on technology-accelerated fakes that are likely also fueled by local prejudices remains to be seen.
