Donald Trump nominates Judge Brett Kavanaugh to Supreme Court

Trump had narrowed down his choice to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy to federal appeals judges Kavanaugh, Raymond Kethledge, Amy Coney Barrett and Thomas Hardiman.

That matters now - especially to Democrats mulling whether to oppose Kavanaugh's nomination to the highest court in the nation - because Trump is facing a special counsel probe into Russian election interference in 2016 and whether anyone in Trump campaign took part.

"From what I know at this point, it appears President Trump has made an excellent choice in nominating Brett Kavanaugh", Aderholt, R-Haleyville, said in a statement.

If he takes a seat on the Supreme Court, his vote could weaken consumer protections and favor expanded corporate rights, say pro-consumer advocates. "Kavanaugh does not meet that basic standard of fairness and impartiality, and I can not support him". A more conservative majority could be more willing to uphold state restrictions on abortion, if not overturn the 45-year-old landmark Roe v. Wade decision that established a woman's constitutional right.

He joined the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in 2006.

Trump's success in confirming conservative judges, as well as a Supreme Court justice, has cheered Republicans amid concerns about his limited policy achievements and chaotic management style. He has embraced an unfettered view of executive power, supreme over strictures that may protect the government from itself, if not wholly from any meaningful judicial review.

He is the kind of judge a President Jeb Bush or Mitt Romney would have picked - a man with an established legal pedigree and a reputation as a reliably conservative jurist.

Last year Trump appointed Neil Gorsuch, 50, who is extremely conservative and two more judges are in their 80s and could signal a retirement soon, allowing Trump to fill the Court with even more right-wing members.

He is the trifecta of bad, and he must never sit on the Supreme Court.

Ms Collins has said she will not vote for any candidate who threatens abortion rights.

"Although some may use the confirmation process as a rallying cry for advancing deeply and honestly held beliefs for many groups in our country, we earnestly ask you to rise above the passions and examine who Brett Kavanaugh is and whether his juridicial ability, extensive experience and many accomplishments in public service qualify him to the position of an Associate Justice".

If Judge Kavanaugh becomes Justice Kavanaugh, it will be the greatest triumph of the Federalist Society. The judge ruled that net neutrality was "unlawful and must be vacated" because he believed the FCC didn't have the authority to make the rule and was overreaching by enforcing it.

As for the right, many will likely back Trump's pick in the hopes of pushing the high court in a conservative direction, but not everyone is pleased. Trump has said he would appoint a justice who would reverse Roe v Wade, a landmark 1973 case that granted women in the USA the right to have abortions across the country.

The Supreme Court is the highest court in the U.S. and gives ultimate decisions on disputes between states and the federal government.

There's more. In a striking passage in an academic article, Kavanaugh once suggested a president does not have to follow the law if he or she finds it unconstitutional until ordered by a court to do so.
