Apple's own Lightning to USB 3 camera adaptor breaks USB Restricted Mode

Apple's own Lightning to USB 3 camera adaptor breaks USB Restricted Mode

As now implemented, the feature is even more restrictive: When turned on, it will "prevent USB accessories from connecting when your [iPhone/iPad] has been locked for more than an hour". Apple "just" released the USB Restricted Mode with the release of iOS 11.4.1 earlier today.

The team of researchers at ElcomSoft have reiterated that once the USB Restricted Mode is enabled, it restricts all the data communications that occur over the Lightning port. After all, if you're listening to music with your iPhone hooked up to a USB audio interface, you don't want the music to stop after an hour, and to re-authenticate before you can continue. In order to let the accessory connect, you have to unlock the iPhone with a passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID. Notable in the new build is USB Restrictive Mode. The toggle is off by default, and that's how you'll want it in order to use the feature.

Of course, this only works if the device hadn't entered in USB Restricted Mode by the time the police obtained it.

It has been seen that the lock doesn't get affected with Apple Lightning to 3.5mm jack adapter, though the one-hour countdown was reset through the official Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter.

iOS 11.4.1 arrives 41 days after Apple released iOS 11.4 to all users. "In other words, we have found no obvious way to break USB Restricted Mode once it is already engaged". "Prior to iOS 11.4.1, isolating the iPhone inside a Faraday bag and connecting it to a battery pack would be enough to safely transport it to the lab", he concludes.

iOS 11.4.1 is mostly bug fixes, reports 9to5Mac, but it does make the Find My AirPods feature more reliable.

Apple's bug fix updates for iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS have been in beta since the last minor updates were released in May. However, this doesn't mean that the USB connectivity with an Apple device is entirely safe.
