Tropical Storm Chris to bring showers

The storm was sitting almost still off the SC coast on Sunday, about 160 miles south of Cape Hatteras.

No coastal watches or warnings are in effect, but forecasters say swells along the coasts of North Carolina and the mid-Atlantic states could produce risky surf and rip current conditions.

Tropical Storm Chris, the third named storm of this season, is forecast to become a hurricane by Monday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The tropical storm watch for Barbados has been discontinued as Beryl "no longer poses a direct threat".

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Sunday that the storm has barely moved since Saturday but was likely to strengthen in the coming days.

At 6pm today, Chris was 571 miles west of Bermuda, with winds of about 52mph and higher gusts.

Tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the centre but forecasters anticipate Beryl to gradually weaken during the next 36 hours. Gradual weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Beryl is forecast to degenerate into a trough of low pressure as it moves across the eastern Caribbean Sea on Monday.

The storm that had been the Atlantic season's first hurricane has been losing power, but residents on islands hit hard by storms previous year stocked up on food and water Saturday and prepared for possible damaging winds, rains and waves.

While Tropical Storm Chris is not expected to directly impact land over the next few days, rough surf and unsafe rip currents will continue to impact coastal areas of the Carolinas, mid-Atlantic and the Northeast through much of this week.
