Tropical Storm Chris could become hurricane

Chris was upgraded from a tropical depression to a tropical storm on Sunday.

The Bermuda Weather Service warned it may move closer after that, depending upon its track.

As the storm is positioned over very warm ocean waters, it is forecast to steadily strengthen over the next 72 hours and become a hurricane between Tuesday and Wednesday. There is a moderate to high risk for rip currents.

The tropical storm watch for Barbados has been discontinued as Beryl "no longer poses a direct threat".

Beryl had been the Atlantic season's first hurricane, then it disintegrated as a tropical storm shortly before reaching Dominica.

The Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, spared Bermuda a year ago, but battered the Caribbean as well as the United States. Tropical storms can have winds reaching 73 miles per hour. "Hence the tropical storm watch for Barbados has been discontinued", the Barbados Met Office said last this morning.

A third named Atlantic storm that formed off the North Carolina coast early on Sunday was forecast to become a hurricane on Monday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said, while Tropical Storm Beryl looked set to threaten Puerto Rico.

Chris was stationary about 160 miles south of Cape Hatteras, N.C. with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, according to the NHC 11 a.m. EDT advisory.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Beryl - the second named storm of this season - is expected to dump heavy rain over the Lesser Antilles at the end of the weekend.

Tropical Storm Beryl is moving rapidly westward toward the Lesser Antilles at the eastern entrance of the Caribbean Sea.

The same amount, two to three inches, was also expected to fall on the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, with up to five inches possible in some areas, through Tuesday.

About 7,000 houses and businesses in Puerto Rico still lack power after Hurricane Maria leveled an electricity grid that was ill-maintained before the storm.
