December 16 Gang Rape Convicts To Hang, SC Rejects Review Plea

On July 9, 2018 SC will decide the fate of the four accused of death sentence in the Nirbhaya gang-rape case.

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed review pleas filed by three of the four men convicted in the 2012 Delhi gang-rape case, thereby upholding the previous order sentencing them to death.

Manohar Lal Sharma, the lawyer appearing for one of the convicts, Mukesh, said that his client is innocent in the case, and was falsely implicated.

The accused, Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, and Pawan Gupta, along with two others, brutally beat, tortured, and raped a 23-year-old paramedical student, Jyoti Singh, on a moving bus, before leaving her bleeding on the side of the road late in the night. After nearly two weeks, the victim succumbed to her injuries in a Singapore hospital where she was flown in a last ditch bid to save her life.

On May 5 past year, the top court had upheld the death penalty to the four convicts - Mukesh (29), Pawan (22), Vinay Sharma (23) and Akshay Kumar Singh (31), saying the "brutal, barbaric and diabolic nature" of the crime could create a "tsunami of shock" to destroy a civilised society.

Another accused in the case, Ram Singh, died in the Tihar Jail and a convicted juvenile was released from the reformation home after serving a three-year term as per the Juvenile Justice Act.

A juvenile, who was among the accused, was convicted by a juvenile justice board.

January 3, 2017: The Delhi police on files a 33-page charge sheet in a local court against five men arrested in the case. Challenging the Supreme Court's verdict, Mukesh had previous year filed a review petition alleging that the court had not properly examined crucial evidence in the case. The fourth assailant has not yet filed a review plea. It had, on March 13, 2014, upheld the death sentences awarded to the four.

June 2: Two death row convicts move the Supreme Court against the Delhi High Court verdict. The Court had reserved its judgement in the matter on May 4 this year after hearing the arguments on behalf of the convicts. While one accused, Ram Singh, killed himself in jail on 11 March 2013, the remaining four were awarded death penalty by a Delhi court on 10 September, 2013.
