Beryl dissipates after Dominica, easing threat to others

YABUCOA, Puerto Rico - The remnant of Tropical Storm Beryl rushed over Dominica but then dissipated, lessening the threat to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, which had braced for heavy rains and strong winds less than a year after being battered by hurricanes.

Beryl is likely to result in rain accumulations of 2 to 3 inches in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, and amounts in some areas could reach 5 inches. More than 1,500 power customers remain in the dark more than nine months after Maria, and some 60,000 people still have only tarps for roofs.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit urged people to stay inside and observe a curfew.

Meteorologist Marshall Alexander told The Associated Press that officials were anxious about those still living with tarps on their roofs after Maria slammed into Dominica as a Category 5 storm a year ago, killing dozens of people. A state of emergency was in effect, the statement said.

That's in direct contradiction of NATO's pledge that an attack against one member is considered an attack against all of them. But when asked a second time, the official said Trump is not expected to threaten troop withdrawals in Germany or elsewhere.

However, environmental conditions are expected to become somewhat conducive for regeneration of a tropical cyclone in a few days when the remnants of Beryl are forecast to move across the Bahamas and the western Atlantic. Tropical storm force winds extend 70 miles out from the center of the storm.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Sunday that the storm has barely moved since Saturday.

McNoldy noted the simultaneous presence of two July tropical storms, Beryl and Chris, hasnt happened since 2011, when Bret and Cindy roamed the Atlantic.

Chris is the only named storm in the Atlantic as of Monday morning.

While the storm was not expected to make landfall as of Sunday afternoon, it will bring "life threatening" rough surf and risky rip currents along the East Coast, the weather service said.
