Hawaii to ban sunscreens harmful to coral reefs

Sunscreen containing the two chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate will only be available to those with a prescription.

Hawaii may set a trend, when it comes to potentially harmful suncreens.

A recent statement by the Consumer Healthcare Products Association argued that SB 2571 will restrict the sale of at least 70 percent of sunscreens on the market. But did you know that some sun protection products contain ingredients that can damage and kill coral reef?

"So, Hawaii is definitely on the cutting edge by banning these unsafe chemicals in sunscreens", Gabbard said in an email to the newspaper.

Leaders need to act quickly to save what coral world has left, he said.

State Sen. Mike Gabbard (D), who sponsored the bill, said when lawmakers passed the measure that Hawaii is "on the cutting edge".

Environmentalists have taken the stance that without action now, the coral reefs of Hawaii will only suffer more unnecessary damage. Scientific studies have shows that oxybenzone and octinoxate are toxic to corals and other marine life.

"The legislature further finds that environmental contamination of oxybenzone and octinoxate persists in Hawaii's coastal waters, as the contamination is constantly refreshed and renewed every day by swimmers and beachgoers", according to the bill.

Hawaii just took a big step to safeguard the state's stunning coral reefs. "We've got [a] limited amount of time".

Raw Elements products are free of these environment-damaging chemicals and only contain organic, non-GMO ingredients like rosemary oil, sunflower seed oil and mango butter, and claim to be the "safest, most effective sunscreen on the planet".

"Some of our products contain FDA-approved amounts of oxybenzone and octinoxate, active ingredients that are created to protect skin against the damaging effects of ultraviolet light and provide critical broad-spectrum protection from both UVA and UVB rays", the company said.

Up to 70 percent of sunscreens sold on the US market contain oxybenzone and up to 8 percent contain octinoxate, which often appears on the labels as octyl methoxycinnamate, National Public Radio reported.
