Upstate NY heat wave: Another brutal day with 'limited relief' from storms

Upstate NY heat wave: Another brutal day with 'limited relief' from storms

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday for northwestern ME, including northern Piscatiquis and Somerset counties and the Allagash region in western Aroostook County. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles, in which authorities said auto interiors can reach lethal temperatures within minutes. A "code orange" means air pollution concentrations within the region may become unhealthy for sensitive groups, such as children, those suffering from asthma, heart disease or other lung diseases, as well as the elderly. With muggy conditions, thunderstorms could put down heavier, localized rainfall. Lows around 76. Highs around 90.

It will be a HOT, HUMID July 4th with highs 89-93 with heat indices near 100 to 107. There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms before noon and then again during the late afternoon. It will still be important to hydrate and take shady breaks (and a/c breaks, too!). That will be enough to support hit-or-miss storms through the afternoon hours, but as is the usual case in the summertime, once the sun sets storms will dissipate. Very high humidity will be sustained and even increased due to still wet soils from recent rains, evapotranspiration from a growing corn crop and a replenishing of already high dew-point air flowing into our area from the Plains and Mississippi Valley. Fryeburg's high Sunday was 92 degrees, with a heat index of 97 degrees.

"The week will start out mild, with temperatures going up a degree or two each day", said James Brotherton, a weather service forecaster.

Hosepipe ban likely across Lancashire
People are being asked to turn off garden sprinklers, not use hosepipes and take shorter showers instead of baths. Irish Water say they don't want to be draconian in how they impose the hosepipe ban.

Relief won't come until Friday afternoon or evening, when strong scattered thunderstorms will usher in a front of cooler temperatures. Some downpours are possible. The high settles to 86.

"We're heading into a stretch of extreme heat and humidity", weather service meteorologist James Brown said. It'll be a bit breezy. Highs will run 81-85 Saturday & 83-88 Sunday with sunshine & a few clouds. Highs around 88. Wind NE 5-10 miles per hour.
