Mexico's AMLO Calls Trump 'Erratic and Arrogant'

Lopez Obrador, who won a landslide victory in Sunday's presidential election and takes office in December, also said he would not make any attempt to run for a second presidential term, which is now prohibited by the law, and would require a constitutional change.

With just over half of votes counted on Monday, Lopez Obrador had about 53.7 percent of the votes, a remarkable margin not seen in the country for more than three decades.

Lopez Obrador's presidential competitors, Jose Antonio Meade of the ruling PRI party and Ricardo Anaya of the PAN party, wished him success "for the well-being of Mexico". Investors have always been expecting a victory by Lopez Obrador, who held double-digit leads in polls for months.

Donald Trump has also congratulated Lopez Obrador on winning the presidency, however the USA president has said he intends to hold off on signing a new NAFTA deal until after America's fall midterm elections.

In brief remarks at a hotel in central Mexico City, Lopez Obrador called for reconciliation after a polarizing campaign and promised profound change that respects the law and constitutional order. But he made a point of allaying market concerns too, promising to respect the central bank's autonomy, avoid raising taxes in real terms, and stay within "legal channels" as he reviews oil deals approved under the outgoing president, Enrique Peña Nieto.

Lopez Obrador also spoke of reducing Mexican immigration to the United States through economic development. Lopez Obrador, who founded the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA), follows in the populist tradition, and vowed to fight fire with fire when it comes to Trump.

Even many Lopez Obrador supporters say the 64-year-old may struggle to achieve his ambitious goals - including getting Trump to soften his tone.

"I think he is going to try and help us with the border", he said.

The results make Obrador Mexico's first presidential candidate to receive more than 50 per cent of the vote since the PRI lost its dominant position in the last century.

It is also the first time that Mexicans living overseas can vote for down ballot races like senators. "I look very much forward to working with him", Trump tweeted.

Trump has repeatedly blasted firms that offshore manufacturing to Mexico, and accused Mexico during his campaign launch of sending "rapists" to the U.S.

Commonly known by his initials, "AMLO", Lopez Obrador has proposed measures like a huge increase in infrastructure spending, but it's not clear how he can do that if he fulfills a promise not to raise taxes.

"The fundamental problem is that this country has a huge demand for drugs", she said. This was the largest election in Mexico's history, with more than 3,400 local, state and federal positions up for grabs. She is now based in Mexico City.

In the end, Lopez Obrador's rants against the "mafia of power" rang most authentic.

The new leader told Televisa he will respect the current team of negotiators and let them continue representing Mexico until he takes office on December 1.
