Donald Trump hails 'great victory' over travel ban ruling

While the travel ban itself may not have enormous implications for science, it is symptomatic of the Trump administration's approach to foreign policy, says Russell Harrison, a senior legislative representative for IEEE-USA in Washington DC.

Justice Anthony Kennedy's retirement is setting off a momentous confirmation battle for President Donald Trump's next Supreme Court nominee that is certain to consume the Senate, inflame partisan tensions and shape the outcome of the midterm elections.

University of Chicago Law Professor Geoffrey Stone told the legal news website conservatives now on the nation's hight court bench have a history of overturning precedent - including Wednesday's ruling in a union fees case.

Reuters Graphics looked at how Kennedy and other judges ruled on major cases in the 2017-2018 term.

This is the third version of the travel ban.

Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., a conservative George W. Bush appointee, could become the center of the court, Blackman said. "His departure will enable Trump to nominate a conservative replacement, skewing the court to the right for decades as the remaining justices serve out their lifetime tenures". Michael Mannheimer, I addressed claims, some of which are echoed in today's opinion, that a decision upholding the travel ban was required by Supreme Court precedent. Trump's nominee is likely to give the conservatives a solid majority and will face a Senate process in which Republicans hold the slimmest majority, but Democrats can't delay confirmation.

Mike Lee to the Supreme Court to fill the vacancy being left by retiring Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy, Bloomberg reports.

Lakers Receiving Pressure To Trade For Kawhi Leonard Because of LeBron
The Spurs made it clear, after a quick look at history, that they won't be sending Leonard to a team in the Western Conference. L.A. reportedly feels some pressure to complete a trade for Leonard in order to convince LeBron James to sign.

He then took aim at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) for saying that Trump's nominee should be "treated fairly" after blocking President Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland in 2016. But the longstanding nature of the court's close division obscures the sheer volume of deciding votes that Kennedy has cast on numerous issues that concern the country the most. McConnell changed rules for filibusters on Supreme Court justices past year to overcome Democratic opposition and confirm Trump's first appointment, Justice Neil Gorsuch. "If we get a justice even more reliably conservative than Justice Kennedy, I'd expect that to be an even more extreme trend".

But Trump's selections for the court have been largely influenced by the staunchly conservative Heritage Foundation, meaning their positions on key issues like Roe will be thoroughly vetted to meet conservative priorities.

"This ruling is also a moment of profound vindication following months of hysterical commentary from the media and Democratic politicians who refuse to do what it takes to secure our border and our country", Trump said.

He notified President Trump in a letter Wednesday, telling him that effective July 31, he would "end my regular active status as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, while continuing to serve in a senior status".

The Constitution is actually pretty vague about the Senate's role in approving Supreme Court nominees.

Rep. Suzan DelBene, D-Medina, said in a statement she was "deeply disappointed" in the ruling.

"I don't think this issue has been presented to many of them", he said.
