Railroad unloading oil from cars after Iowa derailment

Metropolitan Utilities District said it was monitoring pumps it uses to pull drinking water from the Missouri.

The National Weather Service says the Rock River is expected to crest later Friday about a foot below the 2014 record of almost 23 feet (7 meters), when several Rock Valley homes were damaged by the floodwater. Williams added that almost half the spill had been contained with booms near the derailment site, with additional booms downstream, amid concerns that the oil may contaminate the water supply as far away as Omaha, Nebraska, some 240 km to the south. Williams had earlier said that 33 oil cars derailed.

Williams said he was unsure how much oil leaked and how numerous cars were leaking.

Rock Valley, Iowa, just southwest of the derailment, shut off its water wells within hours of the accident.

In the meantime, the city is getting its water from the nearby Rock Valley Rural Water system, which Olson says is not in danger of being contaminated by the spill.

No information was immediately available on how much oil each of the tankers was carrying. The spill reached the Rock River, which joins the Big Sioux River before merging into the Missouri River at Sioux City.

Trump administration says it knows location of all children
Parents who are ordered to be removed from the country must request their child be removed with them, according to the fact sheet. James Lankford says the White House needs to do a better job explaining why families were being separated at the southern border.

Williams said the derailed cars were a model known as DOT-117Rs, indicating they were newer or had been retrofitted to be safer and help prevent leaks in the event of an accident.

Sheriff Stewart Vander Stoep (VAN'-dur stoop) says four homes near the site have been evacuated.

The Rock River has gone out of its banks as well and is expected to crest later Friday at Rock Valley, less than 5 miles (8 kilometer) downstream.

The public's interest in the train derailment is making it extremely hard for clean up and construction crews to get in and out of the area.

Lyon County Sheriff Steward Vander Stoep said between 30 and 40 semitrailers containing clean-up equipment had arrived at the scene near Doon, Iowa, by Friday afternoon. He says it's unclear how much oil has leaked. The Little Rock River rose rapidly after heavy rain Wednesday and Thursday.

Evacuations have been ordered for a northwest Iowa community along the swollen Rock River. The Little Rock flows into the Rock River.
