Microsoft Has Abandoned VR For Xbox One X

As well as its first-party HoloLens augmented reality headset, the company has partnered with third-parties to produce low-priced virtual reality headsets compatible with Windows Mixed Reality - and had always been suggesting that it would be adding support for the platform to its Xbox One console platform, in much the same way as rival Sony launched PlayStation VR (PSVR) for its PlayStation 4 (PS4).

Credit: Tom's GuideIn an interview with GamesIndustry.biz this week, Microsoft's chief marketing officer Mike Nichols said that the company doesn't "have any plans specific to Xbox consoles in virtual reality and mixed reality".

This is a different tune to the one Xbox boss Phil Spencer danced to in 2016, when he touted the Xbox One X, known as "Project Scorpio" at the time, as being the company's first games console to support high-end VR.

Nichols clarified that Microsoft was rather focusing on VR development on PC, and saw mobile as a "good scenario" for mixed or augmented reality. He went on to say that the PC and not the Xbox is the "best platform" for the virtual experiences. As an open platform, it just allows faster, more rapid iteration. Microsoft ditching its own Xbox VR plans hardly come as a surprise. "As it relates to Xbox, no".

Brexit: Theresa May vows 'smooth and orderly' European Union exit
Downing Street left no doubt ministers were confident of drafting a motion which Mr Bercow will deem to be unamendable. Ms Morgan tweeted: "On this basis Parliament's vote is meaningful - and I will support (the) Government amendment".

Smart Move or Missed Opportunity?

The PS VR is easily the most popular headset on the market in terms of total number shipped, but the number of headsets shipped in the entire gaming industry isn't all that large compared with the sheer number of gamers.

There won't be an Xbox equivalent.

Would you like to see Microsoft release a VR solution for Xbox?

Back in March 2017, the company had said that it wanted to bring MR to Xbox users, but now it seems to have changed its mind.
