Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was on Thursday denied an appointment to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose proposal for the global event won United Nations approval in 2014, will lead the way, performing his asanas with an expected 60,000 others in the northern town of Dehradun.

Addressing a large gathering with the British-era Friday building as the backdrop, Mr. Modi said yoga has shown the world the way from "illness to wellness" and enriched lives across the globe.

The prime minister also took to social media to share the intricacies of various yoga asanas. "From Lord Jagannath's grace, the International Yoga Day is being celebrated across the world for harmony and peace", stated Deb. He said that Yoga is healing people instead of increasing their sufferings.

"As the Sun is for all, the Moon is for all, rivers are for all, in the same way yoga is for all", he said. Thereafter, A Mass yoga practice session was conducted under the supervision of a Yoga Guru from Arab Yoga Foundation that included an overview of the benefits of yoga, demonstration of the important Asanas and postures.

"It's a very edifying experience I would say for the kind of participation we're seeing this year". And we are very happy to see that it has got universal acceptance, and as I said, yoga has always been a unifying force and we have seen the development of yoga in the last four years and the kind of positive movement is certainly unbelievable.

Greeting yoga enthusiasts across the world on the occasion, the prime minister said that this exercise is one of the most precious gifts given by the ancient Indian sages to humankind.
