Virginia Officials Warn of Dangerous Invasive Plant

"It's a unsafe plant but I'm not overly concerned about it". Warnings have been issued in previous years after discoveries in Michigan, New York and elsewhere in the Northeast, Midwest and Pacific Northwest.

Mark Sutphin, an agricultural extension agent with Virginia Tech, said he wrangled a piece of Emma's giant hogweed while wearing a Tyvek suit and goggles, then brought it back to the lab for identification.

Touching giant hogweed can also lead to long-term sunlight sensitivity, and blindness if sap gets into a person's eye.

Giant hogweed is so risky because it releases a sap that contains chemicals called photosensitizing furanocoumarins. This causes the skin to be highly sensitive to ultraviolet light. Trying to cut the plant with a mower or a weed-whacker can be extremely risky, as it could cause the sap to spray onto the operator. Also, be aware that a toxic reaction can start as soon as 15 minutes after having contact with the plant.

The reaction causes painful blisters that can form within 48 hours and result in scars that last anywhere from a few months to six years. Compresses soaked in an aluminum acetate mixture - available at pharmacies - can provide relief for skin irritations.

Patrick Stewart returning as Captain Picard for new Trek!
The original " Star Trek " debuted in 1966 as a US television series depicting the adventures of the Starship Enterprise . Stewart led the franchise for all seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation from 1987 to 1994.

These pesky plants spread when birds and waterways carry seeds to new locations. "There is a strong possibility that the Giant Hogweed could find its way into the Tidewater/Coastal Virginia area". The plant is a native of the Caucasus region of Eurasia, between the Black and Caspian seas.

The plant was first introduced to the United States in the early 20th century via Europe as an ornamental garden plant.

Should one touch giant hogweed sap, it's not quite as bad as touching the acidic blood of the titular creatures in the "Alien" franchise.

When the plant spread across New York in the past, The New York State Department of Health recommended that anyone who came in contact with the plant wash it off with cold water immediately and get out of the sun. If necessary, the DNR can even obtain a court order to eradicate it.
