Wilkes Barre Tornado: Severe Damage Caused By Potential Tornado in Pennsylvania

The weather system that created the tornadoes destroyed homes, stores and cars and left at least six people injured. That was an EF4 tornado that struck at 6:55 p.m.in the Allen Park and Ecorse areas.

A few minor injuries have been reported.

A possible tornado tore through parts of Pennsylvania late Wednesday night, overturning cars, damaging businesses and knocking down trees and power lines.

National Weather Service investigators will try to determine if a tornado hit northeast Pennsylvania Wednesday night.

Red Cross spokesman Dave Skutnik said on Twitter that the injuries weren't serious, but called the damage in the Luzerne County township "horrific".

"I never seen anything like this in my life", township Mayor Carl Kuren said.

Luzerne County Emergency Management Agency volunteer Garrett Hittle said crews were working to stabilize the propane cylinder by off gassing the contents. Photos from local news stations show both internal and external damage to the center. The roof appeared to have been torn off of the entire strip of stores in the Panera Bread building, and the Sprint and Stations Grill storefronts in the Ashley Furniture Store plaza had gaping holes in their roofs.

The Wilkes-Barre Township Police Department posted on Facebook that there were "multiple collapsed/damaged buildings" in the area of Mundy Street, and asked drivers to avoid the area.

Governor Tom Wolf is expected to tour the damage site.

First responders are still trying to figure out how many businesses have been impacted in this popular shopping center.
