North Korea sanctions remain until complete denuclearisation, says US

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo conveyed us resolve for "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the State Department said on Thursday, as well as concerns about Chinese activities in the South China Sea.

American Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke at a news conference in Seoul with the South Korean and Japanese foreign ministers.

"President Trump also takes a tough stance against Iran's attempt to arm itself with nuclear weapons, as well as against its aggression in the Middle East".

The footage, which has not yet been verified as authentic, shows Trump in Singapore shaking hands with assorted North Korean officials.

But, Pompeo said that was not the case.

The authoritarian regime in North Korea has long sought an audience with a U.S. President.

But North Korea operates one of the most oppressive regimes on Earth, and despite the president's declaration on Wednesday that the country is "no longer a nuclear threat", it is considered a major US adversary.

While acknowledging that there may be "very conflicting views regarding the outcome of the summit", the United States had been able to spare "the whole world. the fear of war - a nuclear war - as well as the long-range missiles", he said.

Then, during his State of the Union address last January, he said "no regime has oppressed its own citizens more totally or brutally than the cruel dictatorship in North Korea".

And they got this story instead, with an aside about their being fired dutifully recorded near the end of the piece. Former Washington aides claim they were regularly asked to tape up documents that Mr Trump had torn up .

On Tuesday, Trump and Kim met on the Singaporean island of Sentosa. South Korea's benchmark stock index fell 1.8 percent on Thursday, the first trading day after the summit. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said Trump's announcement of a freeze on military exercises had "blindsided" the USA military and South Korea. He said the large exercises would be suspended while negotiations with the North were taking place.

JW: Trump called the war games "provocative".

In this case, the president's influence appeared to be enough to nudge up his voters' impressions of Kim.

"Suspending U.S. -South Korea joint military exercises is a mistake", McCain said, The Hill reported Thursday.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo walks with U.S. General Vincent K. Brooks, commander of United States Forces Korea, upon his arrival at Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, June 13, 2018. "We can schedule this meeting regardless of global events between our foreign ministries", he said.

Putin added that Russian Federation is ready to "make all necessary efforts to establish ties, including in economic cooperation" with North Korea. However, he said Japan wanted the issue of North Korean missiles and other weapons that could strike Japan to be discussed. Large-scale exercises are done to ensure that evolving tactics, procedures and plans can be carried out smoothly and that US and South Korean forces are in sync. Kim Jong-un indicated that in Singapore and shared that vision. Gen. Kim Do-gyun told reporters before the talks.

"But we have made very clear that the sanctions and the economic relief that North Korea will receive will only happen after the full denuclearisation, the complete denuclearisation of North Korea".

Japan and China, the two other important neighbours of North Korea, were also interested in defusing tensions between Pyongyang and Washington. Caty Weaver was the editor.

Measures like the destruction of testing sites in North Korea, if monitored by USA and worldwide experts, could build the kind of trust needed to carry out denuclearization.
