Trump falsely declares post-summit victory

Those details could prove major sticking points in the future while North Korea is believed to maintain a nuclear arsenal capable of threatening the United States mainland.

Pompeo added that Trump was "incredibly clear" to Kim about when the USA would lift the sanctions.

The two men held a 40-minute meeting, followed by a signing of a joint statement in which they agreed to the de-nuclearisation of the Korean peninsula. Officials in China and Russian Federation have called for sanctions relief to be considered, while South Korea has been aggressively pursuing a rapprochement with North Korea.

In the joint statement, North Korea only agreed to "work toward" denuclearization. "Only then will there be relief from the sanctions".

Mr Trump, who returned to Washington early on Wednesday, hailed the meeting with Mr Kim, the first between a sitting US President and a North Korean leader, as a success that had removed the North Korean threat.

The Facts: Trump is wrong to suggest North Korea no longer poses a nuclear threat.

But the United States president trumpeted the outcome as a "deal" with North Korea and vowed there would be "no more rocket launches, nuclear testing or research!"

Trump also agreed to halt joint military exercises between the US and South Korea on the Korean Peninsula, though that decision seemed to surprise both Seoul and the Pentagon. After a three-way meeting with Pompeo and Japan's top diplomat, South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha suggested the USA still had some explaining to do, telling reporters that the issue of the drills "was not discussed in depth".

Sceptics of how much the meeting achieved pointed to the North Korean leadership's long-held view that nuclear weapons are a bulwark against what it fears are USA plans to overthrow it and unite the Korean peninsula.

Donald Trump says North Korea no longer a nuclear threat: ‘sleep well!’

Trump described his meeting with Kim as "an interesting and very positive experience" and said North Korea "has great potential for the future".

In his post-summit press conference, Trump made the surprise announcement that the USA would halt joint military exercises with its security ally Seoul - something long sought by Pyongyang, which claims the drills are a rehearsal for invasion.

Koichi Hagiuda, executive acting secretary-general of the ruling party, said he heard from Abe that Kim did not repeat North Korea's claim that the issue involving Japanese citizens abducted by North Korean agents in the 1970s and 1980s had been resolved.

North Korea will of course be demanding that the sanctions be lifted. But big, joint U.S.

Japanese officials are planning to unofficially consult with North Korean officials during a two-day worldwide conference in Mongolia through Friday.

"Let me assure you that "complete" encompasses verifiable in the minds of everyone concerned".

The report also mentioned that Kim invited Trump to Pyongyang while Trump invited him to Washington and said both accepted the other's invitation as "another important occasion for improved relations".

This is not the first time Trump has declared the news media an "enemy" of the United States, as past year he said that networks that covered him critically were an "enemy of the people".

Tokyo has reacted with concern at Trump's plans to cancel military exercises with South Korea, saying such drills are vital for East Asian security.

Trump Declares North Korea ‘No Longer a Nuclear Threat’
Independent experts say the North could have enough fissile material for between about a dozen and 60 nuclear bombs. Later, the President tweeted that suspending military exercises would " save a fortune ".
