Trump Declares North Korea ‘No Longer a Nuclear Threat’

South Korea's presidential office has said it's trying to discern Trump's meaning and intent, but also that the allies should explore various ways to "further facilitate" dialogue with the North.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says joint military exercises with South Korea would resume I if North Korea stops negotiating in good faith; Greg Palkot reports from Seoul.

Independent experts say the North could have enough fissile material for between about a dozen and 60 nuclear bombs.

Detailed Pentagon guidance is expected this week on carrying out Trump's decision to suspend so-called "war games" with South Korea.

But he said that was no longer the case, and everyone can "sleep well tonight". It's unclear whether the president informed US allies in the region of his plan to end the "war games", as he called them, prior to his declaration.

Trump's tweets pointed to one of the chief gains at the summit from the USA point of view - that its scheduling and the establishing of a relationship between the President and Kim have eased fears that the two sides are on a slide toward a disastrous war.

If Kim's nuclear program becomes globally accepted as a menace to maintain rather than eliminate, the precedent could be risky for non-proliferation, said Lewis.

North Korea's Kim Jong-un understands that denuclearization must happen "quickly", US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday, June 14, warning there will be no sanctions relief for Pyongyang until the process is complete.

Freezing the regular military exercises with South Korea is a major concession to North Korea that has long claimed the drills were invasion preparations.

Trump assailed media skeptics of his agreement with Kim.

The second reference stated: "Kim Jong-un said in order to achieve peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula and realise its denuclearisation, the two countries should commit themselves to refraining from antagonising with each other out of mutual understanding, and take legal and institutional steps to guarantee it". "I said, I have something to say from North Korea".

"He's a tough guy", Trump said to Baier as he departed Singapore on Wednesday evening.

"U.S. troops are not bargaining chips to be offered up in an off-handed manner", Duckworth said in a statement.

Trump has been on a victory tour of sorts since he returned from the historic summit, where he was the first USA president to meet with a sitting leader from North Korea.

He had also flattered Kim as a "very talented man" and said in a tweet that the autocrat has a legacy-making 'opportunity to be remembered as the leader who ushered in a glorious new era of security & prosperity for his citizens!' -South Korean drills was met with concern.

Tokyo is working on arranging a meeting between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Kim Jong Un, with one possibility including the premier's visit to Pyongyang around August, the Yomiuri newspaper reported. Later, the President tweeted that suspending military exercises would "save a fortune". He said he planned to continue sharing the view with Washington and Seoul.

Trump, who said this week that North Korea's nuclear program is "very substantial, " has also softened his rhetoric - suspending military exercises and scaling back his demands for what North Korea must do to receive relief from sanctions.
