Record Australia payout to Rebel Wilson slashed on appeal

Actress Rebel Wilson struts across the stage as she is introduced to speak at College Signing Day, an event honoring Philadelphia students for their pursuit of a college education or career in the military at Temple University in Philadelphia, May 2, 2018.

Wilson was awarded $4.5 million in damages last September, after a jury found Bauer Media had defamed her in a series of magazine articles that said she had lied about her age, real name and childhood.

The star of three "Pitch Perfect" movies and "Bridesmaids" won AUS$4.6 million (US$3.5 million) in damages from the German publisher a year ago after a court found a series of articles accusing her of lying about her age, name and childhood events had cost her roles.

The court set aside the decision to give Wilson around $3.9 million for economic losses, and reduced the $650,000 compensation figure awarded to the actor for non-economic loss by $50,000.

Hollywood actress Rebel Wilson's record Australian defamation payout of $4.6m (£2.7m) has been slashed to $600,000 (£338,000) on appeal.

Rebel was not present in court as she is filming in Europe, but did tweet ahead of the appeal, pointing out that the verdict itself was not being questioned, only the amount of money paid.

Italy summons French envoy as migration dispute escalates
More than 900 people have arrived at the Italian port of Catania in Sicily after being rescued at sea by the Italian Coast Guard. He has accused charities of working with human traffickers but said Italy would not stop rescuing migrant boats itself.

Bauer successfully challenged the finding that Wilson should be compensated for film roles, including Trolls and Kung Fu Panda 3, which she testified she had lost following the articles' publication.

The actress she won her defamation case against Bauer Media in September previous year. Bauer Media immediately said it would appeal the record-breaking payment.

She added: "The reason I'm here is not for damages".

"It followed that the judge's award of damages for economic loss had to be set aside, there was no basis in the evidence for making any award of damages for economic loss".

"I'm looking forward to helping out some great Australian charities and supporting the Oz film industry with damages I've received".

Apparently some weight loss companies are using her image to sell their shit, and Wilson's not into it.
