Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death for adults and the second leading cause of death among teens and adolescents in the United States.

Drugs and guns are two areas in which Zinzow and Thompson are not now working, but they see a desperate need for research to understand their roles in suicide.

And that's how it is most of the time when an ordinary citizen commits suicide-unless it was done in a very public manner, or the person is well-known locally.

"Even if you go into treatment and it's not the right fit, don't despair", Gould said.

In the wake of the recent suicides of fashion and accessory designer Kate Spade and celebrity chef, author, and award-winning travel documentarian Anthony Bourdain, the Wall Street Journal has reported that the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline has seen an increase in calls during the time span following their deaths.

Most mental health experts have since come to agree that exposure to high-profile suicide coverage - especially coverage with gratuitous detail - can trigger those struggling with suicidal thoughts.
